Dialing Instructions
Your phone needs to be an unlocked dual-band, tri-band or quad-band GSM phone capable of functioning on the 900/1800 MHz GSM band in order to accept the SIM card.
Your South Africa Cell to US: 00 – 1 – area code – phone number
US to Your South Africa Cell: 011 – 27 – 9-digit number (drop the first 0)
Your South Africa Cell Number to South Africa: area code - phone number
South Africa to Your South Africa Cell Number: area code - phone number
Important: Toll free 800 numbers based in the US can not always be called from overseas cell phones.
Please Note: There is no support for service when roaming outside of South Africa.
Rental Setup
- Make sure the phone is charged and the menu settings are in English.
For SIM Card Purchases
Snap out the MTN South Africa SIM chip from the credit-card sized SIM card and insert the chip into your GSM Phone's SIM card slot. If unsure, please consult your phone's manual.
- Be sure that battery is charged
- If prompted for a PIN number, your default PIN is "00000" (5 zeros) and then press talk or send.
PIN and PUK codes
The PIN (Personal Identification Number) code prevents unauthorized access to the SIM card in your phone. If you enter the PIN code incorrectly 3 times in a row, the SIM card will be blocked. To un-block the SIM card, you will need to enter the PUK (Personal Unlock Key) code. Please consult your manual for how to disable the PIN-check feature
Activating your service
- Your first call in South Africa activates your service.
- You must add the initial recharge voucher code that was included with your package in order to make and receive calls. This is done by dialing 555 from your mobile phone in South Africa and following the voice instructions to enter the PIN.
Voicemail
Dial 555 and follow instructions.
Checking Your Credit
You can check your account balance anytime, all you have to do is:
- Dial 555, (this is a free call) from your mobile phone anytime.
- Follow voice instructions (option 2)
Purchasing More Talk Time
Recharge cards, called the "MTN top up voucher" may be purchased in denominations of 30, 60 and 180 Rand at many outlets including convenience stores and gas stations. Even if you have zero credit, since incoming calls are always free, you will still be able to receive calls.
Adding Talk Time
- Scratch off the scratch-off area to expose pin number.
- Dial 555, (this is a free call) from your mobile phone anytime.
- Follow the voice instructions to enter your PIN number.
Troubleshooting
If you are unable to make or receive calls switch networks on your phone. Consult your phone’s manual. The steps will be like these:
- Menu > Settings/Setup > Network > Available Network/Change Network > Search
- Select a different network carrier than the one currently shown.
If you are receiving no reception bars, emergency calls only, SOS, or no service
check your phones band setting: Consult your phone’s manual. The steps will be like these:
- Menu > Settings/Setup > Network > Network Setup >Band
- Make sure you select 900/1800
Customer Service
For problems with the cellular network or service:
- Call customer service at 173 from your cell phone while in South Africa. From a land line, you can call 083173.

Service Life
If you don't make an outgoing call within 90 days, your cell phone number will no longer function nor can it be reinstated.
To inquire about the possibility of extending your SIM card’s service life while outside the SIM card’s country of origin, contact the telecom provider's customer service, Cellular Abroad does not provide support for this feature.
