Rent a cell phone for your trip to Peru and enjoy the convenience and security of a cell phone while avoiding the high cost of roaming with a US number. As part of your rental package, you are purchasing a prepaid Peru SIM card. A SIM card—also known as a chip—slips easily into a GSM phone. The SIM card is the "brain" of the phone and is what allows you to make calls within Peru or to anywhere in the world. The card is linked to a prepaid account so that you will never receive a phone bill and will always be in complete control of your expenditures. If needed, you can simply add more talk time to your account by purchasing a scratch-off recharge card and entering the unique code off the card into the handset. Since incoming calls are always free (in Lima), even if you have depleted your credit you can still receive incoming calls from anywhere in the world. (There is a small charge for roaming outside the Lima area.)

You can also purchase other SIM cards as well for other countries to where you may be traveling. (This option is good for those planning on doing a lot of local calling.) We also offer an international roaming Talk Abroad™ rental that is convenient for travel to multiple countries. (This option is useful for those wanting a single number for use in multiple countries and who will be making more calls back home than locally.)

Our Rental Packages
Our Country Specific rental packages include the rental of an unlocked GSM Tri-Band Phone and the purchase of a SIM card specific to your destination country.  There are two phone rental packages available:  The standard rental package features a Haier D6000 Tri-Band “candy bar” style cell phone.  Our Deluxe rental package features a special Motorola V180 Tri-Band “flip” style phone.  The V180 is recommend for people who prefer the flip-phone style; additional features including speaker phone, voice dialing, and a color display; and/or need a more rugged phone.  Both phones are compact and light-weight.  Please see below for pricing and details.

Should I Rent or Buy?
Most of our customers actually prefer the convenience of owning a GSM phone over renting one. You can enjoy the convenience of owning a brand new cellular phone that works in over 200 countries, including the US, for just a few dollars more than renting a phone, and it's yours to keep. You can share this phone with family, friends, co-workers or anyone you know who needs a cell phone while traveling abroad. If you plan on taking other trips overseas, you will save money buying rather than renting a cell phone, since a purchase usually pays for itself by the second trip. With one of our prepaid United States SIM cards, this is also a great solution for having an extra cell phone, a "starter" phone (great for youngsters) or an emergency phone. As with all prepaid SIM cards, there are no bills to pay nor contracts to sign. You only pay for the phone when it is being used.

Important FAQs for Rentals

• When do I order?
  You can order as far in advance as you like - even months prior to your departure. We will not ship your rental until the appropriate date in order for you to receive it in time for your departure. Rentals are typically shipped FedEx 2-Day service, unless faster service is required.
• What is the latest I can order a rental phone?
  Although it's not recommended to place your order at the last minute, you can order up to one business day prior to your departure as long as you call in prior to 4pm Pacific Time. Even if you are leaving early in the morning, we can usually get your phone to you. Please call our 800 number (rather than order via the web) in order to confirm that we can get you your cell phone rental on time. Please take into account that bad weather can sometimes delay FedEx shipments. Cellular Abroad cannot refund the price of priority shipping for orders placed the day before departure if the package arrives late due to the weather.
• When do I get the phone?
  You will receive your cell phone rental a day or two prior to your departure.
• Does the cell phone come charged?
  Yes it does. You need only insert the SIM chip into the rental phone's SIM card slot, which is easily done. (Please let us know if you would like for us to do this for you.)
• What happens if I cancel?
  As long as your cell phone rental has not been shipped, you will only be charged the reserve fee ($25 per phone). In the case that your rental has been sent out, you are only responsible for a one week rental plus the shipping.
• When do I get charged for my cell phone rental?
  You will be charged upon checkout for the full security deposit. Please see our Rental Agreement
• What will the rates be for people calling me from the US?
  That depends on the international long distance rates charged by their long distance company.  We recommend a company called Gorilla Mobile for those calls because they have low rates internationally and their service can even be used from a US cell phone.  Tell Gorilla Mobile you were referred by Cellular Abroad or enter our promo code CELLAB1 at www.gorillamobile.com and they will give you $5 in free call credit to start plus they'll waive your startup fee!  Gorilla Mobile’s phone number is 1-800-881-3004.
• Does Cellular Abroad offer insurance against loss or damage?
  No, we do not, and this is why. Technically, you are purchasing the phone from Cellular Abroad and then we are buying it back from you. The vast majority of credit card companies offer their own insurance against loss or damage for purchases, but usually not for rentals. Therefore, and given this premise, you are already covered for accidental loss or damage...at no extra charge!
